If you are one- year old, what is the most important word for you to learn? You'd think it would be "Mommy" but you are wrong. The most important word in "No".
Before children learn to talk, they can sign. Parents have the tendency to teach children tricks so usually a child's first sign is "bye bye" - waving the hand. Ask any one-year old and they will tell you they wave good bye for the the doggy treats they have grow accustomed to receiving. Shaking their heads "no" is the first sign a child learns that isn't on the list of circus tricks. R has started shaking her head "no". It will be all down hill from here.
Babies are born helpless. They can't do anything for themselves, not even scratching their noses. This means a parent can do whatever they want with their child including making them wear hats with ears. The only form of protest a child has is crying. However, parents are used to crying and babies cannot undo what has been done to them, so the silly hat stays.
Slowly, children learn to do things for themselves, like removing the stupid hat. This is annoying to parents but only a minor obstacle since most apparel has been designed to overcome the puny rebellions of babies (like ties on hats with ears).
Then comes the "no." Baby can now express exactly what she wants (or, more importantly, does not want). What Baby thinks must now be taken into consideration. Ignoring a baby's cries is the right of every parent but ignoring someone's "no" is rude and cruel. If your baby says "no" to the hat with ears, not listening to the child's fashion preferences makes one feel guilty and aggressive.
R tells us "no" all the time. She shakes her head at bananas, being put down, getting dressed, being put in the car seat, having a stranger hold her - the list goes on and on. She is no longer the pliable, cuddly doll we were accustomed to. She has become a person with preferences, rights and opinions. No more hats with ears for this girl.
